When you read this book, you will make many assumptions.
You will assume you are reading about a jealous ex-wife.
You will assume she is obsessed with her replacement – a beautiful, younger woman who is about to marry the man they both love.
You will assume you know the anatomy of this tangled love triangle.
Twisted and deliciously chilling, Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen’s The Wife Between Us exposes the secret complexities of an enviable marriage – and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love.
“My pain was being overtaken by anger.”
The title and the cover has excited me way before I read the book. I definitely expect a lot of thrill.
I also assume that this story will be another problematic pessimistic woman indulging herself in alcoholic issues.
But. How. Wrong. Was. I
Truth to be told, this might be one of the hardest review I write. Well.. I struggle on the other reviews too but this is exceptionally difficult since every sentence you read on The Wife Between Us will bring you closer to the truth and will no doubt make you chill. And I’m trying to write an even more spoiler-free review than the rest of the spoiler-free review I have already wrote.
As you can guess from the title, the story revolved around the two married souls with their shaken household that seems to be collapsing at any minute as the unwanted third party made her appearance. No, this is not a soap opera drama but a thrillng story of the married life.
“This could be the case in every relationship, that we think we’ve entered into a union with another person when, in fact, we’ve formed a triangle with one point anchored by a silent but all-seeing judge, the arbiter of reality.”
Just like how mostly people do in reality, the characters in the book also opt to block certain issues in order to make relationship work.
The silent reality.
Where couples mostly pretend their relationship is as solid as a rock in order to make it work. While in fact, it starts to slip and crumble with no way to trace when the problems really start.
The book will give off fragments of secrets in every chapter, begin with the escalate issues, how the wife viewed the situation, how she control the issues and how the husband-and-wife finally shrugged it off in order to make the relationship work.
The book was told in alternate perspective between the ex-wife and her replacement. It start of slowly yet blurry since the writers spoil the secrets bit by bit as we continue to read the chapters. Readers get to know the characters’ nature only from the wives perspective. The book also done a good job in transitioning the flashbacks and the current life the wives have.
Of course, the characters consist not only the wives and husband. There are also friends and family members of each characters that show up every once in a while to complete the story.
Hmm.. for the plot, personally I think there might be upside and downside.
Obviously, the whole plot seems so simple in which the marriage cracks and comes another third party to married the husband. But we all know, there must be something more than that. Like the dark secrets and the twist we expect as we read, what really happen in the marriage, what is really going on and how will this turn out in the end?
Like I stated above, the plot pace up rather slow. This process is to let readers feel acquaintance more for the characters. You can’t skip for you will missed the important point because there’s secret in every narratives gradually told. However, the plot is really rich and complete. I love the moment when the missing puzzle starts to click, but not only the puzzles- the writers also focused on writing the perfect plot for the book.
The Thrill and The Twist!
Finally this part! This too, have upside and downside.
Truth to be told, once you read the shocking twisting part- the thrill is real it sends me chill and you better catch the stare my sister gave me when I made out a creepy smile for I was lost in words!
However, for the whole book- there’s not enough thrill.
The mystery builds up and without any warning, the twist show up! Enough to make you hold your reads and breath before continuing the thrill. You can’t sense the twist coming! However, rating from the whole book- I thought they’re lacking some thrill. Mysterious- yes, but thrilling-should be more.
Surprisingly, I love the main character. That is, the wife (＾◡＾)
Obviously, I love the thrill and twist but my favourite part is towards the end where it’s finally time to match all the missing puzzles and of course, the ending ¬‿¬
As you can see (and read obviously), I write no names and no brief introductory for the book. I would love if you plainly read review of how good is the book without having to know deeper and accidentally spoil yourself some spoiler that could reduce your potential rating for the book. Believe me, for The Wife Between Us, it’s better if you read spontaneously without knowing much detail for the book.
Like the summary stated, you will make assumptions.
Assume nothing is all I could say.
